Raising Awareness of the Main Carbon Emission Drivers (Exploring AM in Terms of Sustainability)

Summary

Challenge icon

Challenge

There is a basic understanding of the importance of resource efficiency, but decisions are still mainly cost-driven. Furthermore, there is awareness of the different materials available for AM, but usually without information on carbon emissions.

Solution

An intuitive tool for estimating the carbon footprint of additive manufacturing applications makes it possible to better understand the ecological impact of these technologies. The approach follows a cradle-to-gate principle, in which emissions are considered along the entire process chain from material procurement to the completed production step. The tool provides an overview of the main drivers of CO₂ emissions in the production process so that users can quickly identify the key factors that contribute to the level of emissions. From this, targeted optimization measures can be derived to efficiently reduce the CO₂ footprint of production.
